Controlling pain is the foundation of rehabilitation for all of our patients.&nbsp; Without pain control, we cannot expect good form &amp; function.&nbsp; After we identify pain in a pet, we have to decide what to do with that information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Calling Your Veterinarian<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We discussed signs of pain in our September 2016 blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/pain-recognition-and-treatment-options-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pain Recognition and Treatment Options in Pets<\/a>.&nbsp; The first step when you think your pet is in pain is to call your veterinarian.&nbsp; They can help you identify origin and make recommendations to help manage your pet\u2019s pain based on their individual history.&nbsp; Recommendations can be in the form of pain medications, supplements, changes to the environment, manual and alternative therapies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Medications &amp;Supplements<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several classes of drugs that have been used to manage pain in our pets.\u00a0 In our May 2019 blog, <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/the-use-of-pain-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Use of Pain Medication<\/a>, we discuss some of the most commonly recommended drugs for pain control.\u00a0 However, there are a variety of supplements that can help manage pain symptoms in our pets.\u00a0 The most common is glucosamine and chondroitin, which is better to start before symptoms become severe.\u00a0\u00a0 Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are also commonly recommended for joint health as well as skin, coat, and brain function.\u00a0 Newer supplements include curcumin (turmeric), mushrooms, and whole food supplements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to inform your veterinarian of any and all supplements your pet may be taking.&nbsp; For our pets this can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/laser-therapy-in-small-animal-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold laser light therapy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/acupuncture-for-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acupuncture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-massage-for-our-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massage<\/a>, veterinary spinal manipulation therapy (VSMT), and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take a Step<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once pain has been identified in your pet, the most important thing is to take a step to manage it.&nbsp;
