Schur<\/p>\n<p>The aging process affects everyone differently, including our dogs.\u00a0 Some of them age gracefully without too much difficulty while others endure comfort and mobility issues.\u00a0 Many pet owners just don\u2019t realize that there are several products and procedures that can really make their senior years much more comfortable and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Arthritis is very common in senior pets and it can be aggravated by the weather, injuries, etc.\u00a0 Some dogs also develop neurologic issues as they age that can cause mobility issues.\u00a0 \u201cWell, he\/she is just old\u201d isn\u2019t the end of it.\u00a0 So much can be done to improve their quality of life.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Pain Control<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>NSAIDs (Deramaxx, Rimadyl, Metacam \u2013 just to name a few)<\/li>\n<li>Joint Supplements (Dasuquin Advanced, CucurWIN, Osteo TruBenefits, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Fish Oil (Omega Benefits)<\/li>\n<li>Acupuncture<\/li>\n<li>Cold Laser<\/li>\n<li>Massage<\/li>\n<li>Electro-magnetic therapy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.assisianimalhealth.com\/pet-owners\/\">Assisi Loop<\/a>; <a trick<\/li>\n<li>Hide and seek<\/li>\n<li>Take a short walk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although your fur baby may not be able to chase squirrels, climb a flight of stairs, or jump in the car anymore, they can still have a good quality of life as they age.<\/p>\n<p>Pain control is very important.\u00a0 No one wants to get up and move when they are in pain.\u00a0 If your pet has difficulty rising, limps, seems restless or agitated, he\/she may be uncomfortable.\u00a0 Talk to your veterinarian about medications and\/or modalities that could give them some relief.\u00a0 Products such as Omega Benefits and Dasuquin Advanced are also great supplements for middle age dogs and dogs that have had surgeries such as Cruciate repair or Hip Replacement.\u00a0 These supplements help to support healthy joints.\u00a0 Massage, cold laser therapy and acupuncture are also quite helpful in easing and controlling discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Paw traction is often overlooked and older pets tend to be less stable and confident on slippery surfaces.\u00a0 By keeping their nails short and the fur on their paw pads trimmed, they will be less likely to slip.\u00a0 Yoga mats or carpet runners on hardwood or tile floors can also help.\u00a0 Toe Grips are small non-slip grips that fit on your dog\u2019s toenails to improve traction.<\/p>\n<p>Assistive devices are great tools to help pets with mobility issues.\u00a0 Help \u2018em Up Harness is one of our favorites.\u00a0 This harness can be worn all day and has a handle over the shoulders as well as one over the hips.\u00a0 This allows you to give them some support when they need it and is a life safer for owners of larger dogs!\u00a0 Ramps and pet stairs can help your pet get in and out of the car or on and off of the couch.\u00a0 Pet strollers are great for smaller dogs that still enjoy going on outings, but can\u2019t walk long distances.\u00a0 Carts allow dogs with limb paralysis or severe limb deficiencies to go for walks or have supervised play.<\/p>\n<p>Mental stimulation is good for everyone!\u00a0 And yes \u2013 old dogs CAN learn new tricks!\u00a0 There are many interactive dog toys available.\u00a0 Find one (or a few) that your dog enjoys.\u00a0 Play hide and seek games.\u00a0 Take your pup for walk or a ride in the car if they enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p>Although old age is not a disease, it can come with some
