{"id":401,"date":"2017-10-04T14:58:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T18:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/?p=401"},"modified":"2017-10-04T15:29:42","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T19:29:42","slug":"celebrating-national-veterinary-technician-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/celebrating-national-veterinary-technician-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Kim Schur<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-409 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/group-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This month we celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week!\u00a0 It is recognized as the third week in October.\u00a0 This year that is October 15<sup>th<\/sup> to 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<h3>What is a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)?<\/h3>\n<p>By definition, a Licensed Veterinary Technician is a person who has graduated from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technology program (usually 2 to 4 years) and passed their board exams.\u00a0 LVT\u2019s work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p>Pet parents often think of them as animal nurses.\u00a0 This is a good comparison, but they are SO much more!\u00a0 Not only do they assist the veterinarian by taking a history and restraining pets, their day encompasses a multitude of jobs.\u00a0 A few of them are\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phlebotomist<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacy Technicians<\/li>\n<li>Surgical Assistants<\/li>\n<li>X-ray Technicians<\/li>\n<li>Dental Hygienists<\/li>\n<li>Nutritionists<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory Technicians<\/li>\n<li>Receptionists<\/li>\n<li>Anesthesiologists<\/li>\n<li>ER Nurses<\/li>\n<li>Educators<\/li>\n<li>Janitors<\/li>\n<li>Grief Counselors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Licensed Veterinary Technician can also go on to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navta.net\/?page=specialties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specialize<\/a> in at least a dozen different areas such as Emergency &amp; She found her passion for animals while completing a degree in psychology. But once she started down the path to becoming a technician, she never looked back. She has worked in several general practice clinics and an exotic practice in the metro area. She has a chocolate Lab, 2 cats (one who receives acupuncture for his glaucoma), a white dove, 4 goldfish, 5 land snails, and a husband.<\/p>\n<p>Why I became a Vet Tech- For as long as I could remember I have always loved animals and wanted to work with them when I grew up. When I was a senior in high school I found out about becoming a licensed veterinary technician and I knew that was that I wanted to be. I love being an advocate and speaking for my patients. I also love building relationships with my clients and helping them build stronger relationships with their pet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-405 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Colleen-and-Kebo-e1507143266952-800x593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Colleen-and-Kebo-e1507143266952-800x593.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Colleen-and-Kebo-e1507143266952-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Colleen-and-Kebo-e1507143266952-1024x759.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/>Colleen<\/h4>\n<p>Colleen has been an LVT for 7 years, with 4 of those years dedicated to veterinary rehabilitation, and she has loved every second of it. The thing about rehabilitation that she loves the most, is seeing the patients improve week by week and how this affects their bond with their families. Even the smallest amount of progress can be celebrated; whether it is a recovering stroke patient that is able to roll on to their side, a senior dog able to rise from a sit unassisted or a post-operative cruciate patient able to return to doggy daycare. \u201cIt\u2019s not for every technician.
