We can sit and absent mindlessly eat potato chip and cookies.\u00a0 Afterwards, we peek on the back of the cookie packaging and are shocked to see how many calories we just ate. The same concept goes for treating our furry friends.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Indie-e1488392212145-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"A dog looking at a cookie\" width=\"311\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Indie-e1488392212145-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Indie-e1488392212145-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether you are giving them that special cookie because they performed a trick, obeyed a command, or just because they are cute, giving our pets a treat is a pleasurable experience.\u00a0 However, many people don\u2019t realize how many calories are in just that one treat.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dogs are happy with the reward in itself.\u00a0 The size of the cookie they are receiving doesn\u2019t really matter.\u00a0 Typically, caloric intake should only be 1\/10 of the total calories consumed in a day. For example, a 20-lb. dog should receive a total of 334 Kcal\/day including treats and other \u201cextras\u201d.\u00a0 The maximum treat calories should be 33 Kcal\/day, leaving 301 Kcal for food allowance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-314\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Treats-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"Two handfuls of treats\" width=\"336\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Treats-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Treats-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Treats-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/>Using the example above, we can look at small size dry cookies available at most pet stores.\u00a0 One small bone is 20 calories, so for our 20-lb dog, they would only be able to eat 1 \u00bd bones total in a day! \u00a0In the picture to the left, each hand holds\u00a075 calories worth of dog treats, demonstrating not all cookies are made equally.<\/p>\n<p>Replacing those calorie dense treats with healthier\u00a0options is an easy task when you know your options. So here are some ideas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace treats with different types of frozen or steamed veggies like green beans, peapods, carrots, squash, and pumpkin.<\/li>\n<li>Use the pet\u2019s dry food as treats through the day.<\/li>\n<li>Use treat puzzles for mental simulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember with our furry friends it\u2019s not always about how big the treat is.\u00a0 The fact that they are getting a treat is rewarding.
