{"id":304,"date":"2017-02-07T16:42:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T21:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/?p=304"},"modified":"2017-02-08T11:12:09","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T16:12:09","slug":"role-positive-training-rehabilitation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/role-positive-training-rehabilitation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Positive Training in Rehabilitation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Cathryn Adolph, LVT<\/p>\n<p><strong>A little cookie goes a long way\u2026<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-307 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kona-e1486570119224-471x800.jpg\" alt=\"Kona\" width=\"183\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kona-e1486570119224-471x800.jpg 471w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kona-e1486570119224-768x1304.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kona-e1486570119224-603x1024.jpg 603w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kona-e1486570119224.jpg 1864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our office, we use positive training to teach our patients new behaviors with specific form and proper posture.\u00a0 These behaviors are targeted at improving strength, balance, and\/or proprioception (body awareness).\u00a0 The pet needs to pay attention to what their body is doing.\u00a0 We use a combination of targeting, luring, shaping, and molding using positive reinforcement.<\/p>\n<p>In rehabilitation and fitness conditioning, negative or force based philosophy of dog training is avoided.\u00a0 When we use force, often the dog does not really \u201clearn\u201d or pay attention to what their body is doing and the form is frequently incorrect.\u00a0 A fearful pet can become difficult to work with if a technician continues to force the pet to perform an exercise.\u00a0 If bad enough, the pet may avoid the exercise, the people, or equipment involved all together.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why use positive reinforcement?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Positive reinforcement is a fun and easy way to communicate with our pets.\u00a0 Some of the benefits include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourages the pet to keep working with a great attitude<\/li>\n<li>Giving a reward indicates a correct behavior<\/li>\n<li>Withholding a reward communicates an incorrect behavior<\/li>\n<li>While learning a difficult behavior, you can reward effort for trying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Motivation<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-309 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Bert-Cathryn-for-Article-29Sept2016-e1486570280622-800x783.jpg\" alt=\"Bert &amp; Cathryn for Article - 29Sept2016\" width=\"232\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Bert-Cathryn-for-Article-29Sept2016-e1486570280622-800x783.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Bert-Cathryn-for-Article-29Sept2016-e1486570280622-768x752.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pawsitivestepsrehab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Bert-Cathryn-for-Article-29Sept2016-e1486570280622-1024x1003.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We work-out to feel better, run a marathon, drop a dress size, or because a physical therapist instructed us to.\u00a0 The reward for our hard work will be a new wardrobe, a medal, or graduation from therapy.\u00a0 While these are great rewards for us, they are not great motivations for our pets.\u00a0\u00a0 Rewards help motivate the pet to <em>want <\/em>to perform the exercises.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nTypes of Rewards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When talking about rewards, most owners assume a food reward.\u00a0 While we do use food &amp;
